Compressor Monitoring

The proper operation of gas compressor is critical to efficient production of natural gas. A compressor shutdown can mean thousands of dollars in lost revenue, so timely notifications on when and why a compressor ceases operating is crucial to production companies and compressor rental companies. Pipeline compressor equipment is often located in remote areas without easy access or cellular coverage: a wireless remote monitoring system with robust, low-latency satellite data communications is a necessity for equipment maintenance and efficient operations.

The Bullhorn SDT16-SAT wireless remote monitoring unit is ideal for monitoring compressors by utilizing a reliable, low-latency geostationary satellite (Inmarsat) network to communicate measurement results. SDT16 units can report up to sixteen 6-digit register readings, eight 12-digit register readings, or a combination of the two register sizes. It reads alarm codes, RPMs and runtime via Modbus® from Murphy and Altronic annunciators.

By using the SDT16 SAT to monitor compressors in the field, operators receive timely notifications to alarm conditions, including oil pressure. Data is communicated to the Bullhorn web interface: Bullhorn Asset Tracker (BAT™). BAT provides for immediate, in-depth visibility of unit status and alarms and provides a proven backend system to collect, store and generate reports on equipment data. All compressor-related “shut down codes” are mapped to alarm descriptions, allowing online visibility into the status of the equipment at the time of the alarm, allowing operators to provide the proper parts and skill level of the technician for the repair.
